The type of personal protection equipment employees wear when exposed to arc flash risks could make the difference between them suffering serious injuries or escaping unscathed.
This is a new video OSHA has released that aims to show “why proper gear matters” for arc flash-exposed workers.
A burst of energy so strong that it shines as bright as the sun, rises to a temperature more than three times the surface of the sun, and creates a pressure wave on par with the blast of a grenade,” according to a blog post by the National Fire Protection Association.
The 30-second OSHA film depicts the aftermath of an arc flash using mannequins dressed in polyester/cotton coveralls or Category 2 arc-rated apparel. One of the video’s key takeaways is “don’t wear fuel.”
The organization’s guidelines for safeguarding employees from arc flash hazards have been modified. Employers can find advice on detecting and evaluating dangers, putting administrative controls in place, and employing personal protective equipment under Protecting Employees from Electric-Arc Flash dangers.
