BELCO held its annual Occupational Health, Safety and Environment [OHSE] Day today [May 2], bringing together employees, industry professionals, and students under the theme “Lead Safely, Live Safely.”
A spokesperson said, “The day began with a memorial service honoring the 18 BELCO workers who have lost their lives in service to the company throughout its history. This annual tradition underscores BELCO’s commitment to preventing workplace accidents and ensuring every employee returns home safely at the end of each workday.
“As part of BELCO’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the company hosted an electric vehicle car show demonstrating how safe transportation alternatives contribute to both individual safety and environmental protection.
“Safety training seminars were held for members of the public. The fire safety course equipped participants with hands-on extinguisher training and hazard identification skills critical for workplace emergency response. The Smith System Defensive Driving Public Awareness Training session provided participants with practical techniques to reduce road risks.
“The renewable energy seminar and plant tour for high school and middle students engaged over 70 young Bermudians from five local schools, providing hands-on exposure to sustainable energy careers.”
BELCO’s Director of Operational Support Services, Mark Pacheco said: “Health and Safety is the foundation of everything we do at BELCO. This year’s OHSE Day directly trained both community members and employees, strengthening our island’s safety culture beyond our facility. The engagement from local students was particularly encouraging as we work to build a sustainable energy future for Bermuda. These sessions reflect our commitment to sharing best practices and fostering a culture where safety leadership extends from the workplace to our broader community.”
