Following an accident on Thursday, three school children and a female teacher from Ampea Memorial School in the Kwahu West Municipality have been confirmed dead.
Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and Agyarkwa, a private hospital in Nkawkaw, have reported the critical condition of seventeen additional children who were earlier trapped in the wreckage.
Witnesses claim that the incident happened when the school bus, a Hyundai Grace registered as GE 2291-10, carrying students, turned onto the main road without looking for oncoming traffic. This led to a collision with a state-registered vehicle, a white Nissan Patrol registered as GT 8455-19, which belonged to a District Chief Executive who was traveling from Accra to Kumasi.
Locals and other travelers who were on the highway at the time of the occurrence helped reach the victims and assisted in getting them to the two hospitals.
Officers from the Nkawkaw MTTD have also started looking into the accident after visiting the spot.
The town as a whole was shocked by the news, and relatives and friends of the victims flocked to both hospitals.
