For years, locals have been complaining about alleged abuses committed by military officers and thugs who were sent to prevent illicit miners from entering the mining company’s concession.
The young people in Tontokrom are lively, yet they don’t have good work.
About 90% of the young people in the neighborhood are now involved in illicit mining and other social vices as a result of the rising unemployment rate.
The young have been at odds with Asanko Mines for the past few years, as the latter has claimed that the locals are encroaching on their duly obtained concessions.
Locals report that officers frequently sent to crack down on illegal mining activities harass them, which has frequently led in allegations of military abuse.
On Friday, March 1, 2024, the locals organized a demonstration to call for the creation of a Community Mining Scheme in order to put an end to the jokes.
However, the altercation between the locals and the Asanko Mines Private Security on Saturday turned violent.
The cops have transported and placed the bodies at the morgue.
Clement Opoku Gyamfi, the municipal chief executive of Amansie South, verified the occurrence.
